Interview with a career change mum - Kate Scammell-Anderson

Today I interview Kate who is a business strategy designer. she works closely with business owners and leaders who like to re-write the rules.

1.     What gave you the idea to start up your business?

I have always dreamed of running my own business, but I never really believed it was possible!

After having my daughter in 2014, I knew that I didn’t want a bigger corporate career that would take me away from my family. After returning to work I thought I was just about balancing the demands of my career with my core priority of my wife and daughter. I was fortunate at Marketing Director level to be able to be strict about my working hours, but knew the level of control I would have would reduce, the higher I climbed the corporate ladder.

The burning desire for freedom got unbearably intense and I knew I could help ideas and visions become a reality through strong positioning and differentiation – which is where the name Distinct Position came from.

2.     What did you do to prepare to start up your business?

I spent a lot of time on my mindset and worked with a coach on what was holding me back.

Having said that I felt really scared about walking away from my career and salary, I really had to look at my definition of success and who’s definition I was living by.

I also started networking and began working on pro-bona projects along-side my main job.

3.     Which aspects of your business did you need help with? Where did you get that help?

I needed really practical advice around accounting and tax returns, so found an accountant through recommendation. I had an initial call to run through how best to manage my finances day to day so that it is as hassle free as possible!!

4.     Describe what your business does and who you target it at / your ideal client

I absolutely LOVE ideas and I love seeing people come alive when they talk about their idea or what they would love to do. I come alive when I work with people to make their dreams a reality and help them to do what they love. My real passion is start-ups and micro businesses!

It is a big challenge and can be a lonely and slow journey to get your idea off the ground or to know where to start when it comes to making it happen – it is so much easier, enjoyable and effective to collaborate and develop ideas with a trusted partner.

I work closely with new and established business owners and leaders to push their ideas forward in 1:1 or group collaborative strategy design sessions and programmes; to define and design a distinct competitive position for their business, brand or initiative, plus the brand and marketing strategy to make it happen.

Together we can focus on the full strategic process or particular aspects you need support on to:

·                 Define your purpose, vision and distinct competitive position.

·                 Design your brand identity, pricing and proposition.

·                 Differentiate through your brand and marketing strategy and create channels to your ideal customers.

The way I describe it is I am here for you in the same way that your trusted accountant would be – someone you would call to work closely with you as a business partner, but only when you need strategic and marketing capability.

Bringing you freedom and flexible continuity to drive your ideas forward and create a differentiated position for your initiatives or business.

5.     What is the most rewarding thing about having your own business?

When you’re given complete freedom, it is liberating and exciting (and scary!!), the possibilities are endless. I am loving being able to choose what I do with my time and defining what I want to do and achieve with my life.

6.     What has been the biggest challenge?

I told myself that when I made this transition I had to be ok with being a beginner and that I wanted to enjoy the process of learning how to be an entrepreneur, rather than put lots of pressure on myself to be perfect at it. This is a lot harder in practice and I have to keep easing up on the pedal and pacing myself!

Also, learning how to manage my time so I make the most of the flexibility and freedom I have has been a challenge – the usual time management approach just doesn’t work and I’m finding it helpful to look at my week as a rhythm now of free, prep and delivery days.

7.      If you could go back and give yourself some advice what would it be?

Don’t be so hard on yourself and don’t try to be perfect! Enjoy the ride and believe in yourself!
