Interview with a career change mum - Komal George

Today I interview Komal George she is a pharmacist who has a keen interest in spices and their health benefits.  She is the founder of Amala Pure Health a turmeric supplement brand, which is aimed at people wanting to incorporate this incredible spice into their lives daily.

1.     What gave you the idea to start up your business?

I’ve taken turmeric all my life, for all kinds of ailments and conditions.  To me it was always just another traditional Indian remedy that my mum and grandma would concoct when I was child.  Post pregnancy, my mum suggested that I take turmeric regularly to help with rebuilding my immune system.  She gave me a bottle of turmeric capsules to take, I took one look at the ingredients and with the pharmacist in me, decided that I could make them better, so that’s what I set about doing!

2.     What did you do to prepare to start up your business?

Research, research, research! I spent hours trawling through the internet, reading clinical papers on turmeric, assessing the market, listened to numerous lectures online, went to seminars.  All of which I still do! I also took part in the Escape the City Start-up Tribe in September 2016, which gave me a framework and an incredible tribe of fellow entrepreneurs who have been invaluable to me.  I educated myself, the tools are out there, you just have to take them up, but most importantly action them!

3.     Which aspects of your business did you need help with? Where did you get that help?

When you start a business, there is a hell of a lot to learn.  Help has come from meeting some fantastic people. Whenever I’m stuck I just ask my network, fellow business owners, friends, my husband and the help comes! For example, I wasn’t sure about how to price to a wholesaler so I asked a friend who introduced me to someone who had food industry experience and she was immensely helpful.

4.     Describe what your business does and who you target it at / your ideal client

Amala Pure Health is a turmeric supplement brand which celebrates the health benefits of turmeric.  We take traditional Indian remedies, use organic and sustainably grown ingredients and formulate them into a capsule using my pharmacy knowledge to help people who struggle to incorporate turmeric into their diets daily.  Our customers range massively in both age and interest, from university students wanting to improve their skin, busy mothers wanting to boost their immunity, to those with inflammatory conditions.

5.     What is the most rewarding thing about having your own business?

Just simply having the satisfaction that something you have created and developed is helping others, be it in a small way, the hope is that it will help them for years to come.

6.     What has been the biggest challenge?

Undoubtedly keeping on top of social media!  It’s so fundamental to any business now, not being visible at all times can mean your audience can forget you pretty quickly.  This is constantly work in progress for me, but whilst it can be frustrating at times, it has also resulted in some great collaborations for us too.  We recently got a listing with an online health food emporium which happened totally through twitter!

7.     If you could go back and give yourself some advice what would it be?

I think the biggest lesson I’ve learnt is that I didn’t talk to people about Amala early enough because I was afraid that I would be judged for what I was doing. I thought that friends, family and colleagues would try and put me off.  Having worked as a pharmacist for many years, I was taking a completely unconventional path now and it was scary yet exciting.  As soon as I started to tell people about Amala I was really taken aback by the offers of help and encouragement that I got.  Some of which has resulted in some great connections.  So, if you are going to start a business, start telling people your story!
